Abstract:
Artificial intelligence is reshaping conventional understandings of innovation, imitation, and intellectual property rights. As AI systems learn from existing knowledge at scale, the boundaries of what can be protected become increasingly difficult to define across data, model architectures, training processes, and generated outputs. At the same time, countries are diverging in how they regulate data access and ownership claims, producing growing institutional fragmentation in the governance of innovation. This talk examines how these technological and institutional shifts jointly transform global competition, and how firms capture value in environments marked by institutional fragmentation.
