Bio:石先蔚，清华大学学士(2013)，英国剑桥大学硕士(2014) 和博士(2019)，上海交通大学安泰经济与管理学院长聘副教授、博士生导师，国家级青年人才，上海市浦江人才、晨光学者。研究兴趣聚焦企业和区域的创新与创业生态系统，以中国企业为案例并使用质性研究方法，研究成果已发表在Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Operations Management, Research Policy (2篇)等国际权威刊物。研究成果蝉联第十六届、第十七届上海市哲学社会科学优秀成果奖，入选ESI高被引和热点论文，并获多项美国管理学年会(AOM) 和欧洲管理学年会(EURAM) 最佳论文奖。主持国家自然科学基金青年科学基金项目(B类)、面上项目、青年项目和教育部人文社科青年项目。担任Management and Organization Review高级编辑和Journal of Operations Management编委会成员。

Abstract: 

Balancing scale and scope has long posed a strategic dilemma: firms that grow by focusing on a narrow domain tend to forgo diversification, while those that diversify often sacrifice scalability. This trade-off is especially pronounced in digital settings, where hyperscaling typically demands focused, domain-specific deployment. Drawing on a longitudinal case study of ByteDance, we theorize how digital firms can overcome this constraint through the combined use of artificial intelligence (AI) and adaptive organizational design. Unlike traditional resources, AI does not diminish but improves with reuse; its self-learning property generates compounding returns across domains. When paired with adaptive design, AI enables simultaneous scaling and diversification. We show how integrated AI redefines resource (re)deployment, reshapes competitive advantage, and enables inside-out ecosystem orchestration.
